Power cut in Wokingham increases need for generator hire

Some businesses were unable to function, with some being forced to close after a power cut in Twyford, Wokingham.

Hundreds of homes and businesses were left without power for more than seven hours due to an electrical fault that cut the electric supply to 2,800 homes in the area.

With some shops forced to close, the need for generator hire to prevent loss of business has increased in Wokingham.

Cumbrian village running on petrol generators

A Cumbrian village is set to be running on petrol generators for the foreseeable future, having been without mains electricity since Christmas Eve.

Work to lay a new cable began in March on the road to Wasdale Head, though it has now been halted because with dense underground rock proving to be problematic.

Electricity North West said it was now trying to find another solution to the “challenging engineering project”.

The village has been supplied with petrol generators for temporary power.

Electricity North West response manager Jane Fleetwood said: “This was always going to be a challenging engineering project and we are disappointed that it has not been possible to complete the scheme as quickly as we had hoped.

“There are a number of other ways of routing the mains cable and we are currently working with the county council and everyone else involved to agree the best way forward to restore mains supply to the village”

The company said the 1.4km long cable which has run underneath Wastwater since 1977 is faulty and cannot be repaired.

With the London Olympics around the corner generator hire is a highly sought service

The London Olympic Games are now officially only 100 days away, meaning that it is time to finalise equipment needed during the event and finalise all the site services and products to ensure all goes smooothly over the 3 weeks that the Olympic Games will be held over.

Literally tens of thousands of visitors are expected to visit the UK during the Olympic games, which run from and including 27 July to 12 Aug 2012.

Generator hire along with a number of other on-site services such as security fencing and barrier hire have become vital for ensuring that organisers’ plans and the Olympic site and village operate as smoothly, safely and efficiently as possible.

Fancy dress shop owner says industrial generators are ruining business

A businessman in Nottingham says his trade is suffering after a power company placed a large generator outside his fancy dress shop.

The industrial generators were put on the road to help provide extra power following an explosion at a substation.

About 20 homes had to be evacuated and emergency services were called after the accident.

However, Martin Bailey, who owns Crazy Fun fancy dress hire, says the generator which was placed outside his shop on is hiding it from potential customers, meaning he is losing a lot of business.

He said: “I can understand why these generators need to be there – there are 16,000 people getting electricity in West Bridgford, and they are part of a system making sure they can deal with things like power cuts.

“But one of them is stopping people from being able to see the shop. I think I’m losing around £100 of business each day, and apparently the generators should be there for two weeks. It won’t cripple my business but it certainly won’t help.”

The shop owner has said that he is hoping for compensation for the loss of business throughout the period.

Generator hire needed during power cut at wedding

Wedding celebrations in Lancashire were affected when a seven-hour power cut left the hotel venue without any electricity.

Police were called to the Marriott Preston where two couples were hosting their big days when disaster struck on Saturday night.  The fault left the hotel without electricity from just before 6.45pm until 1.45am yesterday.

It affected 1,269 Electricity North West customers in Broughton but the connection to 1,231 was restored within five minutes. The remainder had their power back on by 7.40pm.

However, the hotel’s power could not be reconnected and emergency generator hire was set up at the hotel in the early hours of the morning.

The wedding party of Preston couple David and Leanne Hardingham was in full swing when the power cut out.

The hotel has a back-up generator but it only provides emergency lighting, leaving the wedding reception without music and use of the kitchen.

Hotel manager Mr Gonzalez said: “The hotel management is extremely disappointed that the recent power failure in the local area has affected events taking place at the hotel on Saturday evening.

“We are currently working with our electricity supplier to ascertain the cause of this issue and how we can work with them to minimise risk in the future.”

Advanced technology – portable generator hire

A pair of engineers have launched a fundraising drive in an attempt to build a new power generator known as the ‘PowerPot’; it combines a cooking vessel and power generator for small gadgets.

The generator is designed for use during camping as it can be used as a standard saucepan.  However, it also contains thermoelectric power generation hardware which itself signals a major advancement in technology.

The small generator is available through generator hire and it comes with a wire that you can connect to a USB compatible gadget – such as a smartphone or tablet – and heat from the cooking process is turned into electricity to charge the device.

The innovative system holds potential promise for developing nations, in particular.

“There are over 200 million people in Africa that use cell phones but lack access to electricity. Some must walk over a mile and spend over 15 per cent of their monthly income just to charge their phone,” claimed Caleb Light, chief financial officer and creator of Power Practical.”

The portable generator is able to provide up to 5W of energy in its smallest size, while the larger  X model can provide 10W.

Islanders off the coast of Scotland no longer need to rely on diesel generators

Residents on the Isle of Muck no longer need to ration electricity to just nine hours a day, the limit is set to end after residents secured the funding to install renewable energy schemes.

With the island not being connected to the national grid, the 38 islanders rely on diesel generators and are given slots as to when they are allowed to run their washing machines.

Isle of Muck Community Enterprise Ltd has been awarded £978,840 from the Big Lottery Fund for renewable projects that would supply power for 24 hours a day.

It is thought the islanders will be able to generate electricity through micro wind and hydro schemes.

Resident Mark Johnson said it would make a vast difference to island life.

Mr Johnson said: “As one of the few islands that are not connected to the National Grid, we have been existing on just a few hours of electricity a day. This award will allow us to have a continuous electricity supply using clean, sustainable, renewable sources for the great benefit of the community and the environment. It will hugely change our lives for the better and allow our population to stabilise and grow, safeguarding the community on Muck for years to come.”

Muck is in the Small Isles of the Inner Hebrides, along with Eigg, Rum and Canna.
