South Wales power cut affects businesses with no back up generators

Shops and banks in Llanelli, South Wales were left completely without power yesterday after workmen hit an 11,000 volt electric cable.

Shops, banks — including cash points — and other properties, as well as the market were cut off just before 11.45am, leaving them unable to trade during the lunchtime rush hour.

Business owners said the cut would hit them particularly hard as they were trying to catch up after losing a day’s trade on bank holiday Monday.

There were allegedly no emergency generators available to provide power across the area when the cut struck.

An alledged lack of standby generators forced family theme park to close over May bank holiday

The May bank holiday saw a power cut throw a popular family theme park into darkness.

It is reported that Legoland in Windsor, Berkshire led many UK families to a disappointing May Bank Holiday as it was forced to close during what should have been a peak time for visitors.

Shortly before Legoland’s 10am opening time on Sunday 6th May; this, the UK’s third most popular paid-for tourist attraction
posted an official message up on the Legoland Facebook page stating that a power failure had forced its closure.

This left many would-be visitors furious, especially those who had already started their journeys to the theme park.

It seems there were no standby generators that could have provided power until the problem was fixed, which would have kept Legoland, which attracts 1.3m visitors a year, open.

Suffolk emergency response centre to stock back up generators

Plans have been revealed for an emergency response centre at the Sizewell B nuclear power station in Suffolk.

The centre will house equipment including back up generators and is to be built a mile away from the power station, next to Sizewell Sports and Social Club.

Operator EDF Energy have said that the the new facility would provide office and storage space which could be used in times of emergency.

Back-up generator required in Guernsey

It has been revealed that a power cut that severely affected large parts of Guernsey was caused by the failure of the undersea cable with Jersey.

Homes across St Peter Port, St Martin, the western parishes and the Vale lost power just before 7pm on Sunday.

Guernsey Electricity started a back-up generator to give the residents power again.

The company said it was investigating the reason for the failure and would release more information when complete.

Generator hire providing power on Foula, Shetland Islands

Major problems in Foula’s award-winning renewable energy system have meant the Shetland Island’s inhabitants are back to using emergency generators to supply their electricity.

Shetland’s most remote island last year became the first in Shetland to become totally self-sufficient in energy with a scheme that incorporated wind turbines, a hydro scheme and solar panels.

However, the island’s three wind turbines have been out of action since December when a fault in the high voltage cable meant they had to be turned off as they were feeding through the cable. This has, once again, left generator hire as the only means of power.

York power cut could mean generator hire

Around 1,400 homes in York were affected by a power cut in recent months with no time set for when it will be put back on.

The problems with the electricity supply affected homes in the YO23 and YO24 postcode areas of the city, including South Bank, Acomb and Dringhouses.

Generator hire could be an option across the affected area if it is not sorted soon.

Generator hire in Grimsby required or blackouts will continue

Residents in Grimsby want answers after their homes have been repeatedly left without any power for days at a time.

For a period of around eight months, the Durban Road area of Grimsby has been plagued with blackouts – and now homeowners are demanding action.

Should it continue to occur, the local council may be forced to turn to generator hire as a back up source.

A spokesman for Northern Powergrid said: “We would like to apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused by the power cuts they are experiencing in the Durban Road area of Grimsby, the latest of which occurred on April 15.

“The power cut is due to an intermittent fault on a low voltage underground cable.”

Generator hire needed in Belfast following power cut

Thousands of homes and a large shopping centre in south Belfast were left without power for several hours due to an underground cable fault.

Shoppers had to leave Forestside Shopping Centre after the power cut which affected the Ormeau Road and Annadale Avenue areas.

Generator hire could have provided the area with power during the power cut.

A spokeswoman for Northern Ireland Electricity said the power cut began at 4.13pm and affected several thousands customers.

Homes in North Yorkshire still using emergency generator hire for power

Some residents in Ryedale, North Yorkshire are still without mains electricity after they were cut off in a storm over a fortnight ago.

Homes in Farndale lost their power during storms and many supplies have since been restored. However, around eight farms in Dale End have still not been reconnected.

Many in the area who are without power are using emergency generator hire for their supplies.
